hello, my husband has 1979 ford pick up and it quit on him today. he said it was like someone turned off the key.the module tested fine. it's getting gas and fire. he put starter fluid in it and still nothing. it acts like it's trying. he just checked the compression and it's between 80-90.any suggestions as to what to do and what the problem is and how to fix it?
any suggestions would be so very appreciated
thanks
ohh, thank you for responding.i just called him and he said that the arc is 3/8 of an inch and it is big and orange. better than a 1/2 inch is thin and blue. and this is from the spark plug wire . truck has about 150,000 or better miles on it. can't really tell it's not the original motor.
Timing chain may have jump out of time. Tell him to make a make mark on bottem of dist. & engine block so the marks line up. Marks are for if he wants to put it back to where he started before he moved it. Then move dist counter clock wise to see if it will start about 1/4 in at a time. No need to go more than 1 in. If it dosn't start go back to the mark & go the other way. What size engine??
o.k.,
the engine is a 351
he said that he lined the marks on harmonic balancer top dead center.and the rotar button was at # 1. he pulled the plug and the the piston was at top of cylinder. does this mean it's in time?
again thanks so much
Looks like it's on time but not being there i'm only guessing. It's hard to fix over the net.A trained eye may see it differnt. This thread is along process http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=217693 got to get back to work, see you. Maybe someone will pick up the thread & help.
once i had a bad power valve in the carb and the 351m acted like this . check it if they back fire through the carb sometimes it blows the diaphram out . IT wouldnt crank on ether either .just got to wet .

Hold your hand over the carb and see if it starts . you might have slipped a gasket .
the power valve being out you might get it to run with the pedal to the floor . but if its dumping fuel it wont start . dureing the compression check was it shooting a mass of gas out of like #7or #8 ?? is it back fireing through the carb ? at all . spray wd-40 in the cap. sounds like water or alot of fuel. unscrew the power valve and check the little rubber pump diaphram. In my case i ran down everything and this was the last thing i replaced . took five old hands to convence me thats what it was .
Sounds like the coil is out. It will do that just like the key was turned off.
When you do get it running, change the oil. There is most likely a significant amount of gasoline in the crankcase, and it will wash the bearing of lubrication.
Try replacing the electronic ignition module, it heats up and will shut the motor off at any time, I've had this happen on one of my cars, it's kind of annoying...

Just wanted say "kudos" for all the help for her on the fly like that. Hope you are around when I get stranded!!
i have to agree with matt on the coil idea. my 78 with 351m used to do the same thing. my problem was a bad clip. the one that holds the wires to the coil. it was cracked and the connection would be lost after hitting a bump or just from vibration. it would die just like i turned the key off. i know this is a one in a million thing but you never know. hope you get it going soon.
