The engine has 169,000 miles on it and runs strong. however, there is a ticking noise coming from the engine. What could it be? We are pretty sure its not a rod knock. we also jut had new rocker arms put in with the new rods. noise still there.
I had this problem with my parent's 91 explorer and my 92 as well. The problem was the rocker arms wearing the tops of the push rods. I just replaced the push rods and the ticking went away. I don't know why yours is still ticking, but you should try using an engine flush when you do your next oil change. It is quite possible you have a lifter or two that is clogged.
we toke it to a dealer to get fixed (big mistake) and they told us it was a piston skirt making the noise. however its not blowing any smoke and has been making this noise for years, plus the noise is loud sometimes and sometimes u can barely hear it. so the noise flucuates, which wouldn't make sense for it to be a piston. plus if u feather the throttle just right u cant hear it at all. we are pretty sure its a lifter or lifters. any other ideas and suggestions on what we should do? a new engine is a possibility just we'd rather just stick with this one, its extremely reliable. comments anyone?
Spyderman, the noise could very well be what is called "piston slap". It is common in a high mileage engine. Like the mechanic said, it is the piston skirt slapping against the cylinder wall. This will be louder upon a cold startup. The fact that you can feather the throttle and affect the noise, points to this, rather than lifter noise, which would be constant.
Engines will run a long time while making this noise, although they will eventually start using oil, due to the increased clearances between piston and cylinder. Don
