I have a question I have an F250 Super Duty an I have never had a problem with it untill I took it on vacation, I was pulling a 29' camper on hiway interstate 70 in kansas when I notice when we going up hills and these were not big hills the engine seemed to lose power and when I tried to give it more gas it wouldn't pick up any speed. I also noticed that with the cruse controll engaged and we started up the mentioned hills it would drop off from 65 miles an hour to about 45 miles per hour, it also went from around 9 miles per gallon to about 6 miles per gallon. I would like to know if anyone else has experenced any thing like this I took it to Ford and they checked it out and everything was good...
I am sorry for the lack of information its a 2002, V10, 28000 miles, 373 gears, 4 door crew, standard tires, automatic transmission. I have been pleased with the truck up top this point I am not expecting great millage however I would like to have the power back and at least 9 miles to gallon back..
Yes the tranny will kick down to 2nd gear to bring up the RPMS however when you step on the accerlerator it just didn't have any pick at all, the hills that I was climbing were not big hills as a matter of fact they were on Highway 70 in Kansas, also the dealer ship checked the computor and said it was functing like it should..
If the rpm's are coming up, and you are getting no additional accelaration then I would look to transmission slippage. The additional power is either going to the road or or being lost. Sounds like yours is being lost.
a couple things i thought of. first altitude, i dont know where you are from but kansas is around 3000 ft high and that will sap some power. second that trailer is what 7000-8000 # and you have a 3.73 rear end, its going to slow down some going up hill with that load.
I did change the fuel filter and that seemed to help on the power I checked the air filter and it was clean, when it started to act up I was just west of Kansas City around 80 miles. I will give you some history on the truck when I bought it and was pulling the same camper I was getting about 9 miles to a gallon and it was brand new at the time, the camper is 29 ft long I don't have the exact weight but I believe its around 8000 to 10000 lbs with a tounge weight of 700 to 800 lbs..
Sounds like we've got similar rigs, Russ. Mine's an '00 but configured like yours. I pull a 29' 7700lb trailer and travel that section of I-70 a lot. On the hilly sections I disable OD and set cruise at 65. Rarely do I drop below 60 going uphill, so your experiences aren't normal.
Running in 3rd (OD off) like that I get about 7.5MPG. I can get near 9 with OD on when it's very flat and I don't use cruise (cruise causes it to hunt, even on small uphill grades).
This summer I put a Jet chip and K&N filter on it and pulled the trailer 4,400 miles up to Glacier and back through Canada. Those mods made a huge difference in the mountains. Mileage without the trailer went from about 12 to about 15, but mileage with the trailer didn't change much. Just lots more power when I needed it.
One other thing: Gas does matter. I especially found that true with the chip. Make a point to run a couple tankfuls of good gas (see http://www.toptiergas.com) and see if things improve for you. I could definitely tell when I had bought a tank of marginal gas: Bad mileage & loss of power.
one other thing those hills you are talking about are alot steeper than you think, to give you an Idea I drive truck for a live I pulled a load across Iowa, and never slowed down below 60, and never had to downshift, but when I got out of topeka headed west I was constantly dropping to 9th gear, and climbing some of those hills at 50, I say take it onto a road you have pulled that trailer on before and see if it changed on that road before you get concerned, especially if you have already have checked alot of things.
I would like to thank everyone for all the great information I will try the things that you suggest and let you all know how it works out....RussF250SD
