I have an opportunity to get a good deal on a loaded XLT 1996 4WD 4.0L Engine with 150,000 Highway miles. It's been fully serviced, but I don't really know much about the Explorer (except for tires). It had been sitting for a couple of weeks and when it started, I did not see any evidence of smoke and the engine "looked" clean
We see this as a 2nd vehicle, 10-15,000 miles per year, with 3 or 4 trips > 1,000 miles round trip.
I'd appreciate any information about your experience with high miles on this engine.
i have a '91 4.0 Liter engine, with 169,000 miles on it and runs awesome! just has a ticking nosie in the engine, which is not surprising for an engine with this many miles, it could use a rebuild but its been running strong. otherwise i've had no real problems with my explorer. id say if its as good of a deal as u say, go for it. just make sure the tranny doesn't need a rebuild, otherwise that will be about 2k, so knock some dough off their. and if worth comes to worse, u can rebuild that engine for around a k, so basically if the body is an awesome shape with no rust desnts and belemishes, go for it.
LAST EDITED ON 26-Jun-01 AT 05:06 PM (EST)[p]I have a '96 w/ 105k on it. It's a V8, though. Runs well. I just had to replace the EGR valve and EGR sensor which cost about $200 (caused check engine light to illuminate). My A/C condensor just went out, too. That's gonna be $500 - $600. I'd suggest running the truck for a while with MAX A/C running.
I'd make sure to take close look at the radiator, belts, brakes (epsecially rotors) and exhaust pipes. Hope I was of some help.
