Just checked the dealers and the V8 are out. I hope it has more zip than the V6 that I drove. By the way, the boat I'm pulling weighs 3000 lbs dry weight. The reason I'm looking at a 2002 Explorer is the 3rd seat that I could really use to take friends along. I currently drive a 99 F-150 4X4 company truck that they won't let me pull personal boats. My wife currently drives an
Escape with a V6 and 2.79 rear end....talk about the boat pulling the car! Question of the day...which option should I get
either the 3.55 vs 3.73 rear ends.
If you want room for people and towing ability. Look at an expidition. I drove one of the 2002's with a 5.4L triton. Thing had some ***** for a truck that size. Or if you have nothing against a used vehicle, I'd say get one of the late 90's model broncos. No 3rd seat but they are work horses with anything from a 5.0 to a 6.8L V8.
Your question, which ratio? 3.55 or 3.73? Go for the 3.73, much better for towing but be certain to try to get the optional towing package if available. Your boat at 3000 lbs is a rather small load for an Explorer and could easily be towed even by the 20020 SOHC V6.
I know as I have a 97 AWD 3.73:1, 5.0 V8 Eddie Bauer rated to tow about 6400lbs. My boat weights 3300 lbs empty. I even easily towed it with my old 98 Windstar with towing package but the lease expired and I got the used Eddie for the price of a new Windstar. Forget Expeditions and old Bronco unless you have stocks in an oil company or you get a very much larger boat.
