Been thinking about installing one of those MSD boxes on my 94 Bronco. Do the MSD boxes make a difference?? Can I get the same results with just an aftermarket high voltage coil and increasing the spark plug gap??
i think alot of performance modules recomend performance coil and vice versa so it would prolly be best to go with both and some new thicker (lower resistance) wires
you have the remote mounted icm right? just wondering... it would make this project really easy
The ICM is the Ignition Control Module. On most applications it is mounted on the side of the distributor and is known as the TFI Module. The other type is the remote mounted ICM. I am not sure which broncos had those.
As far as an ignition upgrade, going to an MSD, Crane, or Mallory will improve performance and also increase fuel economy. For a stock engine you will not really see any major performance gains. The stock igniton does a pretty good job for ignition. You will notice a difference on a modified engine. Mainly when the demands on the stock ignition increase, ie. when you add a super charger or turbo which increase the cylinder pressure and also when you raise your RPM above 5,000.
All of these kits should enable you to increase your spark plug gap over stock. But more importantly is the multiple spark discharge that these performance ignitions allow.
If you want an Ignition box and a High Output coil in one kit look at the Crane HI-6S Ignition Kit.
i was just curious if u had the icm on the distributer or remotely mounted i have an 88 with it on the dist and i do not know when they switched to the remote mounted kind
and i was going to warn you not to buy a performance "box"(assuming it is a remotely mounted icm) if ur ICM was the kind that mounts on the dist.
ok you have the remote mounted kind and it is no big deal to replace but i definatly recomend larger plug wires, upgrade plugs, and coil (this might be optional read the module's requirements)
i sure wish i had upgraded mine im having some problems with my ignition sys and have replaced almost everything but i went stock thinking each time that i had found my problem and wouldnt have to replace anything else
My plug wires aren't stock. They're Accel 8mm Pro Stock and the plugs are Autolite Platinums. MSD mentions 8.5mm wires, but will an extra .5mm make a difference??
well u can run what u have but i would imagine the extra juice will seriously decrease their life span and u might want to upgrade them to 8.5 or 9 mm when u replace them
