Too much coolant additive?

Per the owners manual and the Haynes manual the engine holds about 33 quarts of coolant. Anticipating this after draining I added two 16 oz. bottles of FW-16. (4 oz per gallon) When refilling I could only get about 5 gallons of coolant back in. I had to redrain to try to get a 50/50 mix because of running out of room the first time. I ended up with something closer to a 70/30 mix.

Yes I removed the drain plugs and ran the engine til the thermostat opened.

What gives? 5 gallons does not equal 33 quarts?! Do I need to do a bleed and feed to remove the extra additive?

Test the level SCA level, if its reasonably close to within range, leave it alone.

Here one. What is the best way to test the coolant since the only opening in the system is the expansion tank and it only flows when making up for system loses? That is, the way I understand the operation the expansion tank it is basically a head tank. The tank is not representative of the condition of the coolant in the engine.

Testing it would be like sampling the (overflow) reservoir in a normal system.

?????

I guess I could pull the upper hose or drain some out.

Also what about the 33 quarts? How much does the engine really hold?

i had the same problem when i drained mine, i only put in about 5 maybe 6 at the most. weird huh. as for testing your coolant i would suggest not taking any from the degas container, but instead draining some from the radiator drain valve. that way you know you are getting the coolant that is in the engine. the drain valve is located on the bottom right hand corner of the rad. hope this helps. just wondering if you are running green coolant or the gold, cause if you are using the gold, you dont need to add the SCA if you drain the coolant and refill every two years.

BigRed,

I figured the drain would be the way to go. As for the 5 gallons I guess quite a bit of coolant must remain somewhere in the engine.

Here's something odd. Maybe it was the evening light but from identical bottles of Prestone poured different colored liquids. One bottle had the green the other a yellow. By that time I was running out of daylight and patience so I added both. I needed the truck operational the next morning.

I'll test SCA levels soon. I am sure if they are out of spec for a few days it won't destroy the engine.
