Removing air pump/system

On my '88 F150 302 the air pump is going out for a second time. I only had this one for about 3 months. I was just wondering what is involved in totally removing that whole setup and is it worth it? Should I remove the EGR pipe on the back of the heads too? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

your egr pipe runs into the lower intake manifold so its not even part of that system. Yes you can ubolt the rear tubes that come out of the heads, remove the smog pump and pinch the pipe that runs from your cat up to those rear tubes. go to any hardware store to get threaded plugs to go into the heads on the back and the autoparts store will have a smaller belt after the pump has been removed. but leave the egr alone for now.

good luck

Thanks for the reply. I have actually removed both the front and rear (with new Y pipe) cat from the truck so that is not even a problem anymore. The tube that runs off of the air pump that runs to the pipe on the back of the heads feeds fresh air into the heads to help with the EGR right? At least that is what I have gathered that it does. I have a Ford part number for the plugs that will block off the holes in the back of the heads too. Will I gain anything by doing this or will it just cause more problems?

gains will be minimal, but will help clean up the engine bay for sure. I should have done this when i swaped to a 351w but want the motor in asap . kinda kick myself now and its a pain to remove while in the rig. oh well

Ok, so if I just plug up the hose that runs into that pipe on the back I will be ok? What about the vacuum lines that hook up to the two air valves in the system? What do I do about those? EGR still function though?

Thanks for all your help. I may wait a little bit before I do this. I am not too fond of having to remove the plenum again. I appreciate everything.
