Yes you can buy a special tool for releasing the fuel line, does not cost much. I got mine at O'Reillys and works perfect. I did not want to use a knife of screwdriver either.
Pull the fuse for the fuel shutoff switch and start the motor. That should depressurize most of the line. Then you can remove the filter with much less spillage. Have a drip pan handy and rags and a spray bottle of water so that after you install the new filter you can spray water on the locations that fuel spilled on. If you are really paranoid, have a fire extinguisher handy as well.
Also, there is a valve on the fuel rail on the top of the engine towards the front that allows one to measure the fuel pressure to the injectors. It has a regular Shrader valve like one found on a tire. By using a hose off a bicycle pump, you can attach the hose to the valve and relieve the pressure into a container. Don't just press on the valve or fuel will spray everywhere. And don't forget to put the cap back on because Shrader valves don't always perfectly seal!
One must use the special tool or one will damage the hose connectors. But even with the tool it can be a little tricky getting it to disconnect. To make the release easier, push the fuel line and the filter together while pushing the tool into the fuel line connector. Once the tool seats into the connector, the hose will pull off easily. The tool is not necessary for popping the line back on.
Also, to get the tool over the filter's metal line, I had to cut the opening a little on the flange of the tool. But don't mess with the inserted part as there are lots of little metal fingers that need to be released to disconnect.
