Well, to be able to tuck 31's it seems like you already have a slight lift, or you're rubbing quite a bit. Anything over 3 inches on your truck with the 2.5L engine would absolutely murder your performance.

I had a 2000 Ranger with the 2.5L, aggressive 31's and a 3 inch body lift, with a 3.73 rear end. It was a little doggy, especially on the highway, but it never rubbed at stock height even with the 31's. You will see a decrease in mileage, but it won't make it un-fun to drive around town. I probably wouldn't go any higher than 3", and with a 2wd, I'd put a body lift on it... Especially since they're about 1/4 the price of a suspension lift for these trucks. I also had the 5 speed, if you have the auto, it might strain a bit on the highway so a tranny cooler might be something to look into... But that's my .02.
