Saltillo tile Installation help

Need some info,

I'm going to attempt installing pre-sealed Saltillo tile on my back patio. It is 480sq ft. From what I understand Saltillo is not as easy as ceramic tile. I'm worried about getting in over my head. Can this be done by a novice?

Does anyone here have experience with Saltillo tile installations that could provide some "Do's and Don'ts"

Any help would be great

Thanks

My wife and I laid Saltillo in our master bedroom. We had no prior experience with tile. We got a how-to video from Home Depot that taught us the basics and we went from there.

Two of us working together made it easier as one person could wash the grout off before it dried as the other lay the tiles. I used a circular saw with a tile blade to cut the tiles to fit (a glass type tile cutter was too small). A table type saw may be even easier.

Pay attention to the layout before you start to lay the tile. Mark the slab with chalk to guide yourself and plan on how you will handle corners, etc.

To tell you the truth, we didn't find it as hard to lay as regular ceramic tile. I think the slight irregularity of the Saltillo made us more comfortable as we weren;t trying to get it absolutely perfect.

Tile work can be intimidating at first, but think of it as gluing little objects to another object. I've done my entire house, rebuilt a walk-in shower, and done a mosaic backsplash.

Here's the best website on the net for info:

Funny, I'm laying saltillo tile in my house right now.
Couple of things to do with this stuff:
1) wash it off first and then let it dry.
2) Be sure you buy all the tile at once from the same place and then mix them.
3) Use a chalk line if you are doing large areas.
4) Seal before you start to lay.
5) Use a water proof grade thin set if in the bathroom.
6) Take your time
