Which block do i have?

I got an engine to play with a few months ago and a friend said it was either a 351m/400 or a 460. How do you tell them apart?

Measure the piston bore or the dimensions between pistons (bore spacing).

Nominal dimensions:
=================
Bore: 351M/400 == 4.00; 429/460 == 4.36
Bore spacing: 351M/400 == 4.38; 429/460 == 4.90

The 429/460 block is MUCH larger.

p.s. The 302/351W/351M/351C/400 all share the same bore and bore spacing. The 429/460 and the 351M/400 both have a similar deck height ~10.3".

You can find all of these dimensions in the back of Ford Motorsport catalogs available at your Ford dealer.

The 351M and 400 have 8 bolts per valve cover and the 429-460 dont, I think they have 7, not sure.
If the motor is still together this might help narrow it down a bit by just looking.
