mufflers are over rated. i had a glasspack/thrush pack on and sounded like poo...went with a flowmaster 40 with duals and it was ok but i bent the pipes so i did a turndown and i loved it but to quiet...throw a 45* bend and an echo tip after the FM and it was louder but the dam pipe rusted out so i just got a new piece of 3 foot pipe...45* bend and used the echo tip agian...much better and louder. sounds so nice...i get plenty of compliments on it...
i had a 24" cherrybomb on my 1970 for d w/ a 300 in it. whent to the muffler shop and had 2 1/2 pipe and a 1 chamber flowmaster put on it w/ no tips at all sounds real good
i have a 90 bronco II and have gutted the cats and taken off the muffler with a side swept pipe and it sounds awesome, i have people ask me what i have under the hood and when i show them it's crap lol, but i say no muffler gut the cats all the way through and it has a nice rumble, kinda reminds me of a dragster, just w/o the HP
Mine is about as loud as a mellow v8. To me it sounds just right. I think it echoes off the ground and back into the bed with the turn down. just make sore it is not blowing in your rear shock.
I removed the second cat and went with 3" pipe into a 40 series FM with a 3 in. turndown coming out. Sounds like v8 at idle and deisel when you get on it
I am thinking about doing something similar. About where is the muffler positioned under the truck and how far back do you run the pipes with the turn downs. I was looking under mine today trying to figure out what I need to do and I noticed that the only hanger after the cat is almost to the rear axle. I wander what will happen if I dump the exhaust that close to the axle. I know it's not good for the shocks. Did you have to modify a hanger to keep them closer to the front?
Just make it come right out of the muffler. Mine has about a 45 degree angle and it blows down just in front of the axle. I did not need any additional hangars, just the one behind the rear cat. Its not that loud inside the cab but you know its there. It just makes it sound like a truck.
