I had a 160* thermostat in my 88 302. I was told that it was making my engine run too rich. I now have a 195* one. Well it was overheating at every stop light. It was also 113* out today in vegas. What would be a good thermostat for this climate? Thanks!
Sorry bout that kameronth i didnt realize you lived in vegas when i mentioned that thermostate. ya 180 would be your next step. might also look into a larger clutch fan (more blades) and a larger radiator to. and a shroud if you dont have one now those are very important
Kemical. What kind of radiator upgrade did you do? I'm curious because a local shop suggested an aluminum radiator, along with a flex fan. (also upgrading the water pump and adding a hi flow thermostat.)
i went with the aluminum radiator as well. I found a local shop that sells them for about $130 which i installed my self. stay with the clutch fans , i like them alot better. i would start there. if at that time your still not running cool enough look at upgrading to an electric fan or go with the water pump/thermostate upgrade. that might be spendy and not needed is why i say wait on those.
Actually my engine is running fine. I just have a miniscule leak on my water pump seal, so that is why that whole set up was mentioned to me. And also because I'm putting together a wishlist for upgrades that I'm planning to do in the spring. My budget for this is $3000.
Thanks for your input.
Sorry to hi-jack the thread.
The shop has the actual list. But I remember the MSD ignition and blaster coil. Then upgrading the alternator, putting two optima batteries(needed for winch, audio, and alarm system), replacing all of the pulleys. I already have Ford Racing wires, and MSD cap and rotor on. The intake is getting replaced too, but I haven't decided with what. Also up in the air is a rebuild with new cams. I have 109K miles on it, and it runs strong still. I'm getting a Bassani set up starting from ceramic headers all the way to dual pipes. But this I'm counting as part of the underside upgrade that's happening hopefully this fall before the snow flies.
In total I've budgeted 15K for an overhaul, done by the end of next year. The list goes on and on. I can't wait until I can get started. I'll post a new thread once my plans are finalized later this year.
Stick with an OEM clutch fan for max cooling and the stock 195F T-stat. Overheating is NOT caused by a thermostat unless it is defective and not opening etc. Those flex fans don't work very well. Make sure your fan shroud fits properly.
I have never had a problem with my flex fan. I also have a huge aluminum radiator. The new motor is still probably a little tight and it runs warmer I think. Just vegas weather.
