what would it take to upgrade my ol late 80's f-150 to 4x4? ive already gotto get a new tranny, so transfer case, drive shaft, axles, blah blah blah's all no problem, i just need to know what to use with what? which tranny, transfer case combo?
For ease, I would suggest getting the TTB out of a truck, and the tranny, x-case and driveshafts. For a good offroad-oriented truck, get a T18/205 combo and a dana 44 out of a 70s truck. Of course, the driveshafts won't line up, and the mounts will have to be custom. How do you plan on using it, and with what size tires?
mostly as a daily driver, but on the weekends i want a beast of a 4x4 ready to go at the push of a shifter, ive got some 31x12's for the rear and some 31x10.5's for the front.....
id like to keep it perty stock overall i just want some serious 4x4 power n traction. would it be possible to keep the same tranny and just get a shorter driveshaft to accomodate for the transfer case? maybe a lift to make room for the solid axle up front?
As far as the driveshaft, that is why I said to get all the stuff from parts truck. Sure, you can lift it to clear a solid axle, but I don't know how high you have to go to make it work. For running 31s, you don't need to lift too high, so it might look weird with 8" lift and 31s. If you are going to keep it relatively stock, I would just get the TTB stuff. You can pick up the front axle pieces, driveshafts, tranny and transfercase, and slap it all in. I think there was something in the tech articles about this conversion. Good luck, Ted
