Both of my '97 Ranger's brake lights are illuminated at night but when the brake is applied only the right one brightens, also the brake light on the back of the cab does not illuminate...is this a fuse or is it something more complicated...it's kind of strange
Begin by checking the bulbs. If that doesn't solve the problem, check for voltage at the sockets as well as for a good ground. My experience has been the 3rd brake light burns out every 4-5 years.
When you say they are "illuminated at night" I assume you mean the normal running lights? If only one of three lights up when you hit the brakes, first check the obvious - the bulbs. The bulbs in the tail lamp have two filaments so it's not unusual for the running light to work and not the turn/brake or vice versa. It's not the switch or a fuse, as one light is working. If the bulbs test good, then you might have grounding problem, but it's probably just bulbs...

it's the bulb..
tail lights are two stage..one is for park lights which is a dimmer light..the second is for the brake/turn signal which is brighter. The third eye brake light is just a single stage bulb that comes on when the brake is applied..they burn out all the time.
