I have seen a lot of good info about upgrading the chip. Here is my dilemma: I am mainly concerned with my truck lasting for the long haul. So I do not want to do any mods that are going to reduce the effective life of the engine.
I am familiar with car chips, where they can increase power and fuel mileage, without causing damaging stress on the engine, since the factory chips have everything detuned for the EPA.
Is there a chip setting for the Powerstroke that does the same, that will not inherently reduce the lifespan of my engine?
A mild chip will not hurt your engine, or shorten it's life. Even an "Extreme" chip won't hurt your engine or shorten it's life. If you drive the truck hard, that will hurt your engine and shorten it's life.
If you were to install a tow chip, one with a relatively low hp rating, you'd find your truck more driveable, and could very well see an increase in mpg. Many do.
I very much agree with Quad. I run the 60hp "tow/haul" setting on my truck 90% of the time. It runs much better and has also increased the mpg's. But don't expect that if you'll be rompin on it all the time. I didn't read your gallery, (I'm sure you've seen this a billion times) but if you don't have gauges already get them before you chip your rig. You can get dangerously hot very fast..... sometimes I swear the pyro jumps faster than the boost gauge
Believe it or not, I normally drive quite conservatively. I'm satisfied knowing how much power is available under my right foot, and don't flex my muscles too often. When I do, however, the tach, boost gauge, pyrometer, and speedometer swing from left to right in unison, like the Rockettes.
I'd never put a chip/tuner into a truck without a pyrometer. That's the first thing I insisted on when my son-in-law bought his powerstroke.
I've got the superchips 1705 and it has three settings and I run it in the 90hp setting most of the time except when towing then I drop down to the tow-safe 70hp and I get better mileage at both settings have never used the 110hp setting, but feel this mod was a good investment.
