The procedure is in your owners manual. It involves turning key on and off a few time or something like that. My wife has the truck right now...I'll check when she gets home. Gary

Make sure you read the instructions, or have them with you. In order to add a transmitter, you will clear the existing one(s) and reprogram them. So you could potentially lock yourself out if you do it the trial and error method.

: adding new transmitter

When driving down the road the other day my door locks went up and down quite a few times without any action from me.

When I got to the supermarket I discovered my transmitter no longer locked the doors. I changed tha batteries but still no joy.

I think that my transmiter has somehow become unprogrammed. How do I reprogram it.

I have a 1997 Explorer XLT. The handbook says that I have to go back to the dealer to have it done.

Thanks, Mark

I had to do this the other day. All you need to do is turn the ignition from off to on 8times and the doors will unlock and lock. Within 8 seconds of this happening, touch any key on the transmitter and the locks will lock and unlock, and right away do the other transmitter(provided you have another one). You can program up to 4, but they must be done at the same time. Everytime you do the on/off deal with the ignition, it erases all the transmitter codes. So, there it is.

Thanks for the help.

I gues that turning off the ignition for the final time completes the programming?

Except on your '97 you only turn the key on and off 5 times. In '98 with the introduction of the SecureLock it went to 8 times.
