I think You're going to have excessive oil leak. since 289 crank is 2 piece rear main seal and late model block is design for 1 piece rear main seal but I believe it can be made to work. Unfortunately I don't remember what machining process is require.

You're better off asking your local engine machinist and go from there.

1983 / 1984 is the year they change to 1 piece seal.

don't forget...289 crank is 28 oz balance and late model 302 is 50 oz balance.
all 351 W is 28oz balance.

I'm sorry, I don't have any additional information about using 2 piece seal crank in late model block and vise versa, but I know it can be done!

what do you mean by that?

care to explain!

If you're saying you want to buy aftermarket 289 steel crank. Then it will be made for 2 piece rear main seal.

Like I said before...contact your local engine machinist and hear what he / she has to say.

sorry i meant a short stroke crank - should clarrify myself - in a way i am my local machinist- i do most of the work -heads, and stuff most of the motors i've built i've just stuffed new rings and bearings into the bottom end and honed up the bore but i do now a couple of machinists but trying to avoid spending money on machinists labour doesn't cost
