400 crank

Hi there,

I've found a good 400 crank to up the cubes in the 351m, what I'd like to know is do's the 400 crank use the bearing cups (or what ever you call them) as the 351m crank.

Also which is the best way to go with the pistons, should I buy 400 pistons like at the top of this post, or use some stock 400 pistons if i can find them, or have the rods bushed so some 351clevlend pistons will fit.

What do you think.

Thanks Ray71.

Both 351M and 400 crankshafts use the same main and rod bearings.

Beware that 351M/400 engines manufactured before 1977 use a different thrust bearing (#3 main), even though all years of 351M/400 crankshafts are interchangeable. Changes in the engine block require the newer type thrust bearing if the block casting ID is D7TE or D8AE.

All of the stock pistons will have a deep dish for a compression ration of about 8:1. The pistons at the top of the page may require some machine work to provide the desired compression ratio. You need to know your desired end application, then choose a cam to match that application, then select a piston to use. Choose wisely

Yes the pistons at the top of the fourm are a great starting place. I just spent over $800.00 to have a set of customs made. Now I'm kicking my self.

I got what I want though. I have found with proper quinch these motors are killer stump pullers or tire smokers.

I've only turned my new motor to 4800 a few times and thats all it needs. After the proper brake in Im going to dyno it.

The 351m is in a 79 bronco, so it sounds like I'll have to make sure that the 400 crankshaft is out of a 78 or 79 400.

If I do take the path of putting in a 400 crankshaft and pistons I'd like to end up with about 9.5to1 compression, If I use the stock heads how much would I have to take out of the pistons (cc's) at the top of this post.

while I'm on the subject of pistons do's anyone know the cc rating of the stock 351m pistons, because putting in the 400 crankshaft and pistons is plan B.

first I want to try the Aussie closed chamber heads (59cc) cam and timing set, if the compression is to high with the Aussie heads I'll pull the motor and step up to the 400.

Our pump fuel is 97 octane so I might even get away with 10 to 1 compression.

What do you think.

And thanks for the info so far. Ray71

I think that there around -13CC

Dont bother with the 351M go to the 400. You'll be much happier with a 400 with pistons that are avertised at the top of the page. Just use your stock 351 heads with some good valves and minor clean up. Have about -9CC milled out of the 400 pistons at the top of the page so you dont have to run 97OCT.
Buy your self a Nice cam and timing chain and a 650 Edelbrock and you should be ok. I am running a 750 holley vaccume but it might be a tad much. I have an old wolverine cam in my truck which has about .004 more lift than the new truck avenger cam series.
