Ok, so when I turn on the lights, or brake lights, or turn signals, my temperature reading goes way up. It doesn't actualy seem to be overheating. It's an '85 Econoline, BTW. Does this sound like some strange ground issue or what?
The gas guage doesn't move? Make sure it doesn't move like the temp guage. If it does, then it may be the instrument cluster regulator mounted on the back of the instrument cluster.
I would say if the gas guage is alright, then you may have a bad ground to the instrument cluster itself, but it doesn't make sense that it moves with the brake lights. The instrument lights and the turn signal indicators all use the instrument cluster ground, but the brake lights don't. Are you sure all your lights work correctly in the rear of the van(the brake, turn, and taillights)?
It even goes up when I turn on the fan for the heater. I've been getting some pretty odd readings from the ammeter as well, where it spikes at first start, then evens off at the middle position after a few minutes. I see it jump when the turn signals are operating. I'm fairly certain it was not doing this before. as for the fuel gage, I have dual tanks, and the back one is not reading at all, but the front one seems fin, but that may not be related.
