I haven't worked on a 390 before, but I am assuming the #1 cylinder is on the passenger side front like all Ford V8's.

Make sure the rotor is installed correctly. It should be keyed somehow, and only go on one way.

Find the timing marks on the front pointer and harmonic balancer. Line these up, and then see if the rotor is pointing to the wire in the cap that goes to #1 cylinder. If it doesn't line up, then turn the motor around with a socket one turn, and line the marks up again. The rotor should point to the #1 cylinder wire when the cap is installed. If it doesn't, then the wires are all mixed up on the cap. If it does, then follow the wires around the dist cap in the same direction the motor runs. The wires should be in this order going around the cap.

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

If you find the wires are all mixed up, write back and someone will explain how to get the engine to #1 TDC, and get everything straighten out
