exhaust question

i have a 7.3 psd and we cut muffler of and ran a y-pipe with duals. we had to run three inch pipes because no one around here can bend four inch. ive heard that its not real wise to cut the muffler off because it tends to heat up the turbo alot. do i need to run guages with this to monitor everything? i need some advice or suggestions with what i should do.

Removing the muffler does not heat up the turbo more, it lets it run cooler. You do not need gauges to monitor the upgraded exhaust, but installing them is never a bad idea.

First off yes get the gauges before you do anything else. As for the muffler being cut off and causing an increase in the heat. I belive it would be the other way around as there is less restriction in air flow without a muffler.

Why? It always sounds better when more people say something.
Had something like this just happen in General Automotive.
Somebody asked what was the difference between a 4X4 and a 4X2 (imagine that), and four of us posted within 1 minute of difference, all of us saying the same thing.

Got a quick addon, is it safe to run a diesel truck with no muffler, Ive heard that with no back pressure you can burn up the valves. Is this a myth? Just curious Ive been tinkering with cutting the muffler out, thought I get some advise from the experts.

You won't hurt your valves by running a straight pipe. You can damage your intake valves by running your EGT's too high, but that's a different subject.
Straight pipes won't damage anything, except the ego of the guy in the Dodge in the next lane.

There are a number of suppliers for gauges, and one of the best is Motorhaven, the store that operates this website. I'd give them a long, hard look before passing over them.
As far as what gauges to get, the most common ones are a Pyrometer for measuring EGT's, a boost gauge, and a tranny temp gauge, assuming you have an automatic.

In addition to what Quad said, your turbo should supply you with all the back pressure you need

EGT stands for Exhaust Gas Temperature. I've got an open element air intake with a straight piped stock (3.5") exhaust, just added a flip chip, but at stock I would run anywhere from 600 to 800 degrees going down the highway. It depended on whether I was climbing a hill or coasting down it, it can change a lot.

Thanks Guys,
I have a pyrometer in my truck. It yellow lines at 800* and red lines at 900* At 70 mph it rides at 400 * I must have placed the reciever in the wrong place. I do however have a K&N air intake with a 5 inch duraflo exhaust. I also have a superchip.

The thermocouple for your pyro is mounted post turbo. The #'s that Quad quoted you are from a pre-turbo mount.

Thanks Cookie,

Should i move it or leave it alone? I should still see any temp. spikes where it is now.

By The way, This is a great site. Being new to the deisel revolution (I race late models and I think I know alot about gas engines) I have learned quit a bit from you guys. It is unbelievable the differences between the two engines.
