I have a 1994 Explorer with a V6. The vehicle has 120,000 mi. on it. Under heavy exceleration the motor pings as if the timing is advanced. I do not have a scanner to pull codes but used a mutimeter to extract some info. The problem appears to be worse when the motor reaches normal operating temp. Is the ECT malfunctioning or not or is the problem with the ECC module. The plugs all look good and everything else appears fine. Any thought on the subject?
A lot of times the wires inside the Maf Sensor get dirty & cause the problems you describe . The wires can be cleaned with an electrical parts type spray cleaner .
I have a 91 and had pinging noises, first when towing my boat, then when climbing hills or heavy acceleration. I cleaned the MAS sensor, disconnected the battery to clear the computer then drove 'briskly', tried fuel additives and injector cleaners. Once I started using 89-90 octane gas it went away. Hasn't returned and I'm at 140K miles. I use 89-90 now for everything, cars, boat, even lawnmowers.
The MAF , Mass Air Flow is what you are asking about , some people mispronounce & spell it Mass . It is the sensor mounted in the air intake system directly after the air filter housing . It contains two wires , one heated , one not . The Ecu measures the airflow & density by the resistance it takes to keep the heated wire to a specific temp , using the cold wire as a reference . Over time these two wires accumulate dirt & can cause problems , esp detonation or overall poor performance . Using a electrical parts spray cleaner often restores these sensors to normal operation .
When cleaning the MAF sensor, REMOVE A BATTERY TERMINAL. Other wise the computer will not know you cleaned the MAF and will run the same. When you disconnect the battery, the ECM will RELEARN from the MAF and how you drive.
I have a 91 ford explorer with 265000 on the body, 65000 on the engine and 5000 on the trans. I noticed the other day that my engine was missing a little. when she warmed up it went away. Thought it was a vacume leak. nope. maybe the plugs, wire's, coil pack. replaced them all, nothing different. found a code tester, hooked it up. it gave a list of codes, Mass Airflow Sensor, crankshaft sensor, throtttle sensor. all these sensors and electronics. come to find out my ECM Electronic computer module took a crap. oh well, I got a brand new one for 100 dollars.
