Keep alert for people with cell phones in hand standing near you in the checkout line at retail stores, restaurants, grocery stores, etc., With the new camera cell phones, they can take a picture of your credit card, which gives them your name, number, and expiration date. Identification theft is one of the fastest growing crimes today, and this is just another example of the means that are being used. So, be aware of your surroundings. Please forward to all your friends and family, acquaintances to.
I duno about that one...I have a new camera phone and I know it's not really possible to take a picture of that high of quality to read the #'s off it. I bet if I took a picture of my CC right here on the table you wouldn't even be able to pick out the #'s. Mine takes videos and the camera always makes a shudder noise when you take a picture, you'd notice if I was taking a picture.
Since most places don't take an imprint of the card anymore you could probably cover the pertinent info with some masking tape. Hide the info but still be able to swipe the card in the reader. I'd be careful with the machines that actually "ingest" the card to read it though. Wouldn't want to jam the machine.

i am with ya there, what is the resolution of a picture phone like 160x120 or even worse. i dont think a picture phone could record that information and it be legible.
just a couple of things...my camera phone takes 640x480 pic's and are very clear and i can turn the shutter noise off if i wanted too, its a flip stlye phone...i don't even have to open it to take a picture, just hit the button, next years phones are goin have 3 times the resolution with ditigal zoom....
my phone too, takes 640x480 24bit pictures. pretty damn clear. and they geet even clearer if I e-mail them too my computer. of course I would never use a cameraphone for any reason like that, though.
Take a pic of my credit card with a cam-phone and the cell-phone might melt.
I myself refuse to fear over things like that, however, if someone is standing THAT close to me at a checkout, the issue wouldn't be if they were trying to steal my identity, it would be, "Why on earth are you standing that close to me. BACK OFF!"
If somebody wants your info bad enough, they can get it. Much easier than that.
Take my identity, you can have all the bills, too. Unless they're takin' a picture of my cash, they're SOL.
EDIT:
In the words of Chris Rock, "My credit's so bad, they won't even take my CASH!"
sprint has a phone thats 1.3 megapixels and up to 8 times digital zoom. i dontthink it would zoom too far on 1.3 though. my 640x480 wont zoom in high resolution mode so it would be pretty obvious if im pointing my phone a few inches away from them.
lemme guess this was sent to you in an e-mail from a friend and the original person was someone from a security person or a law enforcement agency...this screams urban legend, same as above...i see a guy looking over at my card we are gonna have issues...plus it only takes about 1/2 a sec to swipe it and re holster it in your wallet....i dont sweat it.
And this is directly from the CIA, FBI, BATF, IRS, ICE, and Secret Service!!!!!!!!! DO NOT let people take PICTURES of your CREDIT CARDS with a CAMERA PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! If anyone has their cell phone out while you are paying, SHOOT THEM IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I swear this is true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW E-MAIL THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW 50 TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sound familiar? Sort of like a "warning" about a virus from a friend of a friend who has a third cousin who's ex-wife's first boyfriend worked for Norton a long time ago?

I do not advocate shooting anyone under the above circumstances. It was to illustrate a point.

There is a picture of my RV (but i'm not in the pic) using my camera phone. It has zoom of up to 4x, and can take videos. That pic was taken with the zoom off, at the highest resolution. Mine will also take pictures with the flip phone closed...but you are unable to look at what your taking a picture of (ur suppose to use it to take a picture of yourself). Mine has 4-5 different shutter sounds, but I can't shut the sound completely off.
You're not suppose to have pics like this up here but...I will remove it in a few days.
I have good eyes and I can barely read my CC number when it's infront of me...let alone through a picture like that. I myself am not going to worry about this....others can do what they wish with the info
Hey, don't discount these things! Look what a friend sent me the other day...
> I hate hoax warnings, but this one is important. Send this warning to everyone on your e-mail list.
> If someone comes to your front door saying they are conducting a survey and asks you to take your clothes off, don't do it. This is a scam; they only want to see you naked.
> I wish I'd gotten this yesterday. I feel so stupid and cheap now..
