Trouble finding Headers

I have an 89 XLT with 5.8L 351 and I have been trying to get a set of headers that will work for this engine. I am getting a new exhaust done and figured I would put a new set of headers on it at the same time.

I ordered a couple sets from Hedman the first one was a shorty with a flange for the EGR which I don't need since I am not in an emissions controlled area. It was also for stock exhaust and mine is after market 3 bolt. The second set the tech at Jegs told me would work but they turned out to be for the 351 Windsor which mine is not. I thought I had a 351W but my mechanic who runs a good garage said it is not, its just a 5.8L 351 so what type of header will fit?

I have a set on it that were there when I bought the truck but the tag is to rusted to read what brand it is. Can anyone suggest a brand that will fit, shorty or long, with a 3 bolt collector. I have looked at hedman, hooker, borla, summit generic, and many others all list for the 351W, 302, or 460.

Does the motor look like the stock setup? If so, you have a 351w, and your mechanic is an idiot. I do not see any reason why you wouldnt have one in there. Is it fuel injected? If it is, its a Windsor, no questions asked. I see the first set you bought that the EGR fitting. Why not just find a mating, closed end nut and just thread it up and seal it? That would eliminate it. Can you get us a picture of your engine bay?

Just a plain o'll 351....LOL what an idiot that guy is. From 87-96 all the 351's are Windsors LOL just a plain 351

Check out truckperformance.com and proficientperformance.com they should both have everything you will need as far as headers go. Just go with the EGR headers anyways....you not gaining anything leaving it off.

Go with the bassani shorty headers because of the quality and the equal length tubes. Its a ball&socket fit so you would have to do away with the 3 bolt exhaust flange, they SUCK anyways...leak to much.

If youre going with a true dual setup (which is what it sounds like youre wanting to do), order in a set of Hedmans from Summit Racing. They run around $140, then when you have the exhaust ran, take the flange from the bolt on collector and have them weld the pipe directly to that flange and then bolt the welded pipe/flange assy to the collector on the header side.... TADA, no more leaks or blown collector gaskets (Oh and yeah, find another mechanic, as the bronco/F-series 5.8s like you have are all Windsors. The only reason peolpe dont specify the W or M after the 351 is they no longer made the 351MODIFIED at that time)

It's Fuel Injected

Thanks alot, it is a 5.8L EFI and I guess he is an idot. It looks stock as the Ford logo is stamped onto the block and everywhere else. The owners "helper" was the guy who looked at it and he is an idiot so I should have known. I will stop in and talk with them and have them try to explain themselves. They do great exhaust work though so I will just have them bolt up the headers I have. I will keep the set I have from Hedman # 89270. I have no EGR stuff on the rig so I figure I would get rid of the shorties and go with some longer ones. Thanks again.

Be careful on getting rid of the egr hookup, you may start throwing codes on the computer.

Throwing codes

I already have the check engine light on. I have no EGR components on the rig right now. My mileage is lower but otherwise I can't see any difference. I had my engine scoped and cleaned and they said it looks really clean for an 89, although the mileage is low. Does not running the EGR on it cause potential damage to the engine at all?
