need some help to determine if my alternator needs replacing. I have a 1992 XLT, 3.0 V-6, 5 speed, 2 dr, 155k miles. For the last 2 1/2 - 3 years the amp meter gauge has wiggled from side to side while idling and the headlights flicker and I can hear the electric fuel pump speed fluctuations that follow the amp gauge fluctuations. At higher rpms it stabilizes out and I don't see this although here lately it does it lightly at highway speeds. I have had Autozone check it out with their meters and they say it's charging normally.
Should I change it out preventively, or could it be another problem that I'm not aware of?
Had a similar problem in a work truck. Bouncing needle, flickering lights is a problem with the voltage regulator (if idle speed is correct). This went on for 18 months and just quit last week-end.
Now you're getting the fluctuations at speed too.
Change the alternator and have done with it because there's no way of telling when it will quit.
AL.
i toook my truck to autozone to see if my alternator was shot and they hooked up this wheeler dinger cart thinger and tested my alternator for free. i dont see why they couldnt do that for yours!?
woops sorry i didnt read the rest of the first reply! my bad!
one more question...it's been a while since I've had to replace an alternator, so where's the best automotive place to buy one and should I get a brand new one or will a rebuilt one do? I was considering Autozone, but if anyone has a better suggestion please let me know.
