I finally got my donor T-18 home. I didn't notice until I had it pulled that there was a cut bungy cord on the shifter (I know I know). I couldn't get it to shift and was told that the forks were probably not set right, to pull the top off, put it in reverse, then put the top back on. I did this, assuming that reverse is when 1st gear slides all the way over the back gear. Still no shifting. The transmission will turn when I spin the input shaft but I can't change the gear. 1st gear is worn pretty bad so I expect to replace it but I'm thinking a mild rebuild isn't going to solve my problem. Also, I'll go ahead and mention this, the bars in the top wouldn't move either while I had it off.
The long single bar is the shifter for reverse. It sticks down the farthest. Did you somehow not get it in the collar? Your second thing makes me think the entire shifter top assy is screwed. I would start there and make sure everything is in good working order before you worry about the tranny. Ted
I went out and took the top back off and manually moved the bars. Then I put it back on the tranny and it goes through the motions of changing gears but when it feels like it's in gear, the input and output shafts won't turn. When it feels like it's out of gear, the shafts turn opposite directions. Locked in reverse apparently. The shifter has ALOT of play in it. I think you're probably right about the top being screwed. I've got it doing alot more than it was but it's still not right.
Make double-sure that you don't have the reverse arm on one side of the collar, instead of in the middle. It sounds to me like that is what is happening. Of course, I have been wrong before...
