Coolant Hose Reinforcing Material

Anyone know what the woven reinforcing fabric material is, in MotorCraft's molded radiator & bulk heater hoses????

Same question for Gates products.

I havn't been able to find out on their respective web sites, or ask the question, as catch-22 glitches in both sites prevent one from doing so.

I know for instance, KellySpringfield & Dayton use Rayon woven material as the reinforcing fabric.

I've read polyester & aramid is also used, but have not found who uses these as a reinforcing material.

I know Rayon looses strength when exposed to water, so I don't want hoses made with it, as it's likely to be exposed to coolant when the hose ages & comes by internal microcracks, which could expose the hoses reinforcing fabric to coolant, thus Ryon would be more likely to burst IMO.

Polyester & aramid fibers don't loose strength like Rayon when exposed thusly, so hoses made with them would likely be a better choice IMHO.

I know which synthetic rubber they all use, but have not been able to find which reinforcing material is used.

I've done a search & read through 20 pages on the Heating/Cooling forum & posted this question, to no avail.

I have some 10 year old OEM hoses I want to replace & want to use the best I can find.

You've made an interesting point.
Questions:1. Who makes hoses for Ford?
2. Which reinforcement type are they?
I preffer to buy 99.9% of all my parts at Ford because of the high quality. I am due for hoses as well & will be watching this thread.

Like Dealford sez, interesting topic. 7 or 8 years ago I replaced the upper & lower radiator hoses on my 87 2.9 with Gates hoses. When I bought these I was not real impressed with the thin walls & mushy feel, but figured they were some new type of high tech rubber so used them anyway. Two weeks later the lower hose developed a pin hole leak. Replaced both hoses with the much beefier Good Years & no more problems.
One thing to be careful of if you have a 2.9 -& i've learned this the hard way- is to make sure that the upper hose doesnt extend too far into the engine compartment where it gets sliced by the alternator belt. On some hoses I've had to cut about an inch off at the radiator end to clear the belt.

The Ford replacement OEM hoses are Motorcraft brand, but i don't know who makes it for MC. This is off the MC website:

Molded Curved Radiator Hose

Pre-shaped molded hose promotes easy installation. EPDM (ethylene-propylene diolefin monomer) rubber over braid construction increases hose life by resisting swelling, cracking and splitting.

Flexible Radiator Hose

- Steel-wire reinforced to resist kinking and collapsing
- Permanently shaped after relatively few hours of use
- Flexible hose EPDM rubber, reinforced by steel coil insert, exceeds SAE standards for hydrostatic burst strength and helps maintain full section diameter for unrestricted coolant flow
- EPDM rubber material resists oil, grease, antifreeze and all approved coolant additives

Bulk Length Radiator Hose

A fabric-reinforced EPDM rubber coolant hose as a connection between the radiator and the block and other components in the engine cooling system. This hose:
- Provides high burst strength and resistance to breaks and buckling at connections, which can be caused by vibration and engine movement
- Maintains full flow of coolant for engine protection

QVM Heater Hose

- Premium quality high-pressure hose constructed from high-temperature EPDM rubber and reinforced with "Nomex" aramid fabric
- Provides excellent resistance to the damaging effects of ozone, coolants, heat, aging, and under-the-hood high temperatures

Standard Heater Hose

- Rayon-fabric-reinforced high-pressure heater hose constructed of EPDM rubber
- Provides resistance to damage caused by coolants, antifreeze and additives
- Resists deterioration resulting from heat, aging, ozone and under-the-hood chemicals
- Standard O.E. heater hose in pre-1996 vehicles

Heavy-Duty Heater Hose

- Premium quality EPDM synthetic heater hose constructed with two rayon-braid reinforcing tubes
- Resistant to the damaging effects of coolants, heat, ozone, aging and under-the-hood chemicals
- Provides excellent resistance to kinking and abrasion and has exceptional high-pressure burst strength
- Delivers long life under heavy-duty, severe-service operating conditions
EPDM (ethylene-propylene diolefin monomer) rubber is:

Synthetic rubber; a polymer of ethylene and propylene with a small amount of diolefin monomer added to permit vulcanization with sulfur. Possesses excellent resistance to ozone, sunlight and weathering, has good flexibility at low temperatures and good electrical insulation properties.
Sounds pretty good, but I'm not a chemist, either...

"Exceeds SAE standards for hydrostatic burst strength", I think is just another example of Fords quality standards.
Just for trivia sake, it would be interesting to know for sure what the reinforcing material is though.

Good feedback on the heater hoses Rockledge.

Yup EPDM synthetic rubber is used by all mfg's in their molded radiator hoses, that I've found info on, but not all tell what that reinforcing fabric is.

I somwhow missed or forgot what I had read about the MotorCraft QVM premium quality heater hose reinforcing material, as I see from the info you posted, it's "Nomex" aramid reinforced, just what I'm looking for, BULLETPROOF, right. lol

Guess pawpaw's grey matter is laying down on him again.

Now if we can just find out what their MOLDED radiator hose reinforcing material is.

Bet someone out there knows.

Had a long conversation today with our local MotorCraft ditributor.

1) He doesn't know what the reinforcing material is in the MotorCraft molded radiator hoses, but he says GoodYear makes them for Ford, but doesn't know to what specification. So we don't know if it's the same material that GoodYear uses in theirs or not.
I looked on GoodYears site, but found only trade names for the reinforcing material. The rubber material I found on another site, it's a modified EDPM, what ever that means. They do say they exceed SAE standards.

2) Couldn't give me a contact lead. Said we only have one MotorCraft rep for the east coast & he covers North Carolina to Canada.

3) Did say MotorCraft batteries are made by Johnson Controls.

4) I forgot to ask about who makes the belts.

So we have one more small piece of infomation, GoodYear makes the MotorCraft molded radiator hoses.

Maybe someone out there knows what fabric GoodYear uses in making the MotorCraft hose.
