This has to do with a noise from the turbo. What I've done is replace the old air filter with the largest K/N Filter (round) filter I could find with a 4" opening. I have about a 6" piece of SS exhaust pipe attaching to the filter and from the filter to the turbo intake (unfortunaley) i have used the bendable dryer hose. I never drive off road with the truck. The noise sounds like a belt squeal whe nit shifts in the 45pmh rangeand then levels off, not the nice whine you normally get. Also my mpg have dropped off a bit. I've read many times that getting a bigger filter increases pmg and power but so far haven't seen a noticeable difference if any. Any thoughts on why that noise has appeared after I changed the filter and what can/could I do to fix it? Thanks
It could be that the flexable dryer venting is colapsing and the noise you hear is the engine trying to suck air through the colapsed hose , just a thought .
It is my understanding that this noise you are hearing is called turbo surge/stall. I have this same noise when I installed my AFE intake, this (tsh tsh tsh tsh tsh shhhhhh) sound i am told is normal and most trucks if not all make this noise it is just alot more noticeable with a open air intake verses the stock inclosed crap. the Wicked Wheel or a bigger turbo housing (not sure of the brand name) should solve this problem. something to do with the wastegate also, lots of air thru the turbo and and some of it comes back thru the intake causing the surge/stall sound. If I am wrong, someone please chime in.
Do you have a programmer or a chip in your truck? If not it is definetly not the turbo surging. But I have to agree that it sounds like the collapsible dryer tube. I would get a hard tubing set up asap. As with this dryer hose you can cause an increase in EGT's and burn up your turbo and your motor. Because you do not have enough air coming in to feed either one of them.
Like elkslayer said, it might just be you can hear the turbo spinning at idle from each cylnder firing and spinning it. Our TT 3408 Pete does the same thing.
I have no other mods done to the truck. The noise was not there when the stock set up was on and the only time I hear the squeal (like a belt slipping) is when accelerating when the turbo would spool up. Once at the desired speed the noise will go away. The idea of the tube collapsing sounds plausible. Any suggestions as to a 4" plyable hose that would work? Thanks for the input, I'm new to the forum.
