Had pinstripes, Hood Ornaments, Bed Rails, special trim options... And depending on what option code you got, Air Conditioning, Power steering, brakes... etc...
Sure do, They used the same hood ornament as my 1981 Explorer special.
In the 1975 to 1979 model year they came in different colors.
RED, BROWN, BLUE, GREEN, WHITE, BLACK
Black was the most comon.
The 1980 and 1981 Ranger XLT Lariets also had hood ornaments very simular, except they had three diamonds in the ornament instead of where it say's explorer.
OK, I knew they had EXPLORER on them but I thought maybe you knew something I did'nt. There is a guy on ebay stating he has a special edition hood ornament from a 75 ford truck. It has three cougar's?? or panther's on it. I figured it was from a cougar line but he state's differently. Thanks for the help.
It looks like a Ranger XLT Lariat hood ornament. Ford put these on the 1980 and 1981 models. For some reason I thought that they were Diamonds instead of cats. (memory playing tricks perhaps, although I could swear seeing one with diamonds instead.) . It's possible that it could be a Ranger XLT Lariat Ornament from before 1980 (I have yet to see one though).
The bad thing about his part number is, could it be an engineering number? If so all the hood ornaments have that number, but there is a seperate Part number for the actuall hood ornament he has. Which isn't always written on the piece. Him not giving the complete part number is also strange to me.
A good thing about an Engineering number though is that you can cross reference it to all the parts that are related. IE: all the hood ornaments put on ford trucks etc...
Special Edition hood ornament though? If so I've never heard of it. The Ranger XLT Lariat Trim Package was few and far between and the rarest of the trim levels, so that could explain it's rareity too.
I'll do some homework on this, it's got me intruiged!
D5TB is infact an Engineering number, and the full number is D5TB-16850. The Part Numbers is what I found out puttering around Dennis carpenter, and help from my friend at Ford that match the Engineering number.

D5TZ-16850-A: Explorer: WORLD
D5TZ-16850-C: Explorer over world
D6TZ-16850-A: Wreath with 3 lions : Brown
D6TZ-16850-B: Explorer: Black
D6TZ-16850-C: Explorer: Red
D6TZ-16850-D: Wreath with 3 lions: Blue
D6TZ-16850-DA: Wreath with 3 lions: Red
D6TZ-16850-DB: Explorer: Blue
D6TZ-16850-DC: Explorer: Brown
D6TZ-16850-RS: Wreath with 3 lions: Red
D8TZ-16850-A: Explorer: Blue
1980-1981 F-series:
E0TZ-16850-A: Explorer - Black
E0TZ-16850-B: Wreath with 3 lions: Black
There are schematics at this link, thanks to Dennis Carpenter,
Sorry I couldn't help more, Even my friend at Ford is Puzzled on this one. We think it's an option extra on 1976-77 Ranger XLT, and 1978-79 Ranger Lariat.

You have helped enuf! I have yet to see or hear of a "special edition" option from FORD, I have also never seen any other ornament other than EXPLORER. If indeed this is a true and correct piece it is quite rare and might be worth a few buck's! Thanks

I know a guy who has a 78 F100 Custom shortbed that has this hood ornament with the 3 lions on it. His truck is all original with 40k miles on it. It is a plain-jane F100 with a 6 cyl. and a 3spd. He is the second owner of the truck. He bought it from the original owner late in 1978. I think it's kind of weird that they would put a hood ornament on an F100 Custom, but I guess it was an option.
That makes sence to me. The Custom was Fords "Customizeable" base line pickup.
You could add almost any option you wanted to it. You could have ordered a Custom with the full trim of a Ranger XLT, but would cost you twice as much so the salesmen would steer you to a Ranger XLT instead.
So having this hood ornament on his 78 F-100 Custom would explain this well. The original owner wanted a hood ornament and he got one.
I wonder if this hood ornament could have been a dealer add on as well as a factory optional extra? Looking like a good possibility if the 78 F-100 has no other trim.
Very facinating rare piece! Brings up more questions than answers.
This 78 F100 Custom has no other chrome trim on it, only the hood ornament. The trucks' owner told me that it came from the factory with the hood ornament.
Sorry it's a bit different than the original topic but does anyone know what a crossroads edition package is? There's a badge on the side of my 76 f-100 custom.
It's a silver badge with the writing faded almost right out. It's a solid metal badge so I didn't think it was a dealership package. Where can i post pics?
