I have a 94 f-350 4x4 that I use as a welding truck for my business.I would like to get some info on how long I should expect the engine to run.The truck has 204,000 miles on it now and there has been few problems, but when they happen it realy messes up my shop.I had to replace the timing chain cover because it leaked and the heater core went out.The alternator went out also and it needs a new clutch too.I dont want to buy a new truck but I dont want to keep spending time and money on this one if it wont last much longer till it needs somthing major.Any help or suggestions would help a ton. Thanks.
This is just normal maitenance you have experinced so for except the oil leak. But if you have not abused the engine and taken good care of it there is no reason you won't see 300k. Of course it could also fall apart tommorow.
Like any mechanical devices it will fail and fail at the worst times. You are the only one the can say enough is enough.
Consider this, is it better to spend $2000-3000 to fix your truck or spend $40,000-45,000 to buy a new one? My uncle bought a 97 F-250HD4x4, with a 460 and E4OD tranny with 6 miles on it in 1997. He had that truck in the shop 4 times the first 6 months! Just because you buy new doesn't mean you buy better.
Fix what you've got and you'll be better off. My $.02
Yeah, this is true Big Hoss. I have a 93 F350 crewcab, and after 270k miles (I have about 289K now) I was going to trade it in and get myself a shiney new F350 crewcab. Then I discovered somewhere in the last 11 years, trucked more than doubled in price. So, I used the "fourth" rule, divided the price of a new truck by four, giving me 10K, which is what I'm willing to put into this truck to 'clean it up' and do it over. The only rust I have is on the front fenders, $45 a side for new ones and that problem is solved. Swapping out the tired 351 for a 500cid stroker, some turbos, some wiring changes to support GM EFI, etc. No way is any of this going to even cost me close to the 10K.
Ok I,ll just fix it.A new cab and chassis was around 41,000
using frederick formula you could spend $10250 and be money ahead. if it is really important that the truck stays going, and you are worried about the engine go buy yourself a new ford FAR (ford authorized rebuild) engine, and keep it in your shop, and if the old one shucks out, or you are thinking it is getting ready to, and you have some time drop it in, and maybe if you have some time do some real extensive maintanance on it like replace all of the fluids, and checking the bearings in the diff or atleast look at the gears, really check the gear box out etc, but if the truck itself is solid it is worth replacing anything that goes wrong with the powertrain, and even repainting it if the paint is starting to look a little rough
