I love fords, and have owned chevys but never could get one to stand up to my beatings. I owned a 1970 mustang 302, a 1968 mustang 302, a 63 ford fairlane 500, a 68 mercury cougar 302, a 66 ford camper special, a 1970 ford f150, a 76 ford country squire wagon 351, and now own a 1988 f150, and 93 ford ranger splash. I used to have a 67 chev nova II, that I liked also, but did not stand up to the punishment. It was pretty fast and beat every car I raced, until I raced a mustang. That was it for my short chevy life. I dont have anything against chevys, but I wouldnt feel right owning one. My country squire wagon that I paid 250.00 and traded a shotgun for, that sat for 2 years, made it from washington state, to Connecticut, and up to Maine, in about 5 days, with no trouble. I drove my 68 mustang from New Jersey to Michigan, and then to Santa Cruz california, to Washington, and back to Michigan via the Mountains of northern Utah, with only a overheated ignition switch problem in Wyoming. Sucked in the middle of winter. That was my favorite car. Unfortunately kids and marriage forced the sale of my stang and cougar. Just wondering what you guys have to brag about. Give it up!!
My 76 4x4 F150 makes the trip to from my house to dallas (50-55 miles one way) once a week with no problems cruisin 70 mph. This is with my motor having such bad compression in 2 cylinders that its missfiring like crazy. Drive it every day and its been very good to me.
I've owned quite a few old Fords, many I wish I still had. I had a 1960 F100 2wd that I put a 390 GT engine in. That truck was fun to drive, I'm not sure what tranny was in it but I got pulled over one night about 20 miles south of Greeley CO. The highway patrolman told me I was doing 135 and the only reason he stopped me was to find out what was under the hood. I also had a 69 Torino with a factory 390 4 speed, a 69 Mach 1 that was a 351C 4 speed, a 68 F100 that was a 250 3 speed that I converted to a 390 4speed and a 70 F100 that was a 360 auto that I put a 390 in. Theres been many others, more than I want to list and ya'll really want to read about.
My dad had a 64 Ford truck with stock racks on it and used that truck hard for nearly eight years. Hauled lots of heavy loads with it. Had a 292 w 4 speed and 4.10 rear end. Top speed was 55 mph. That ruck never let us down. It only had short trips its whole life. Another neighbor of mine has a 1972 Ford HD 4x4 Highboy. He still uses this truck. The box is rusted pretty good.Everything is original on the truck including the motor. Has over 160,000 miles. He bought it new. The motor still purrs. A 390.
I thought I would also share the truck I learned to drive in, way back in 1979. It was my dads 73 F100 4x4. It had a built 428CJ engine in it, a 4speed and 4.10 gears. Dad bought it new in early 74 and we put the 428 in it in 1978 along with 2.5" dual exhaust and some Maremont turbo mufflers. That truck was FAST, I raced many a car with it and beat most of them. The only thing I can never forgive my dad was selling that truck to my uncle instead of me in 1989. My uncle never did take care of it and ruined it in less than a year. My dad had three trucks between that one and his current one. A Nissan 4x4, a Chevy 4x4, a Dodge 4x4 and now a 93 F250, 460 5 speed 4x4.
I got a 72 250 ranger xlt HD special w/390 4v hooked up to the 4-speed and 4.10 gears. I take it on 100mile trips into nowhere to load it to the guns with cedar shake wood and it comes home every time. I use it for firewood too, Ive dragged many one cord trees out of the bush with it, smoking the tires, rear end bouncing up and down etc... 50% of the miles that truck does are fully loaded. ALl this pounding hasn't shaken anything yet, replaced one u-joint.... Not only is this my work truck, the trans+rear came out of my highschool truck!! The only thing that stops this truck is running out of gas and -25 dgree temps
Not much of a story but my dads 86 F150 5.0L/Auto 2wd with 85k has had a hard life but keeps on ticking, well barely ticking now. About everybody in my family has drove it for extended periods on time. Me and my sister learned how to drive in this truck. I used to do doughnuts, jumped a couple snow mounds when I drove it. Young and stupid. With my sister and brother-in-law I imagine was harder on it than I was. My sister hit my mom's van once at least with it. Although us kids wasn't as hard on it as dad. He's hit at least 3 bulls with it, countless stumps... I can't remember all the stuff he's hit but rough doesn't describe this truck. As far as pulling not much anymore but has pulled more than it's share and probably 5x what it's intended to do before that. The only sad part is I can't get my dad to take care of it and he's about to park it. I finally got to start after a month of setting with a new coil but now coolant's shooting out behind the water pump. I'm hoping he'll say no more so I can acquire it and bring it back to original condition.. still has alot of life left at 85k.
I used to deliver newspapers in a '31 Model A 2dr sedan. Trying to get a snowy hill was always fun. I could just put it in low gear, get out and either push or find something to throw under the spinning rear tire. Eventually it clawed itself up the hill.
