67-72 vs 73-79
I'm looking for some information on the differences between the two. I recently purchased a 76 f100 4x4 even though I was looking for a 72. I couldn't pass it up once I looked it over and drove it. everything on this truck has been restored except for the body. It a 390ci 4bbl with a 4speed. They had started a frame off restoration but due to a death in the family had to stop. I'm really wanting to fit this drivetrain into a 72 body and looking to see if that's a reasonable thing to do or if too many things just wouldnt fit? the other option would be put the drive train under the 72 frame, would axels fit? engine frame mounts? steering? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It can be done, but I'd put the drivetrain parts from the '76 to the '72 before I went the other way. The frames on the later trucks are a bit longer and that needs to be addressed or you have a big gap behind the bed or your axles are not centered in the wheel well. Changing the engine, tranny and axles to a nice '72 frame and body would be easier IMO as they are direct swaps, assuming the motors are the same between the 2 trucks. Even if they aren't, not a big deal.
