I haven't done this yet but plan on it within the year. I DO NOT like sitting on top of the gas tank, and think the weight transfer toward the rear axle would help in stoping and going. Also seating options improve if you relocate the tank. I added a coss frame member to use for mounting the top of the shocks. I want to have made a tank that will fit between that member and the stock cross member at the rear. Mike
There is an article here on this site in Tech Articles about using a '65-'66 Mustang gas tank behind the rear axle. Seems pretty straight forward and easy, but I have not done this. If this idea interests you, let me know and I can measure the tank in our '66 Mustang fastback up and see if it will fit between the rails of the '42-'47 pickup.
i love the set up with the mustang tank if you could measure it up would be sweet - still doesn't help me with where i stick the spare wheel anyone got any ideas on where to put that
Okay, I will get the measurements off the tank in my '66 and compare them against the frame of one of my '46 pickups and report back tomorrow with my findings.
did a quick eye-crometer check 2day and looks like i might be able to fit a spare wheel in where the fuel tank was - it'll allow me to hide a lot of other stuff that i don't want seen as well so i'll keep you posted on that. frenchtown flyer did you find any difference in the feal of your truck with the tank hanging out back
Okay, measured the tank in my '66 Mustang fastback versus my '46 pickup. The Mustang tank is 32 3/4 inches across, and about 24 inches from front of tank to back (these measurments taken from mounting flange of tank). The 1/2 ton truck frame is 34 inches from outside of rail to outside of rail. So, if one were to make a frame for a little more support the Mustang tank most definatly slide right between the rails. The only prob would be that there is a crossmember on the frame that would have to be relocated to install the tank. I would think sliding it back towards the back of the truck would be best. The filler would be placed on the bed floor, towards the back. Nice thing about the Mustang tank is they are available new (no rust, no 30+ year old tank) and can be had cheap, plus they come in 16 to 22 gallons sizes, depending on the year used (65-70).
cheers for that, i've just ripped all the rivets of my frame to clean it up and rebuild it so i'll start posting my build up soon - i'll start hunting for a gas tank i think cheers
I too did not want to sit on a fuel tank. I had one custom made. It turned out okay, I just wished my builder would've been a little more of a perfectionists. I placed it inside the frame foward of the rear axle between the crossmembers. It holds 20 gallons.
Hi Bootie,
I don't know how far you are from installing the rear gas tank but I am doing the same thing you are doing on the rear.
I found a '70 model Mustang/Cougar tank that is 22 gal for the extra weight in the rear.( you can use a 16 gal also that will fit).
You can get your brand new gas tank and sending unit from; www.gastanks.com
Also, check out this site where another person has done the same thing with pictures, stats, and any thing you would need to do to install a rear gas tank. http://www.clubfte.com/users/jniolon...ustangtank.htm
PS. This was done on a 1953 ford P/U on this site above, but still very similar setup.
Hope this help, and any other person doing the same thing.

I installed a mustang gas tank behind the rear axle and i am happy with the results. This past summer my neighbor put a lat 60's comaro gas tank behind his rear axle. The deminsions looked the same as my mustang tank, except the filler neck exits the back of the tank, which allowed him to hide the filler behind the license plate. It turned out very slick.
The spare on at least the 46 model was located on the drivers side, in front of the rear fender.
I imagine the 47 was the same as the body styles were the same.
cheers biglee still tossing up options on fuel tanks - chassis is just about rolling bit more mucking in to do yet - had 2 many family commitments of late to do much of anything but will keep posted
