I noticed that there are many posts about problems with the 91 Explorers. Is there actual problems with them or is it just that they are getting old. I have to ask this because I just purchased two 91 XLT's and would like to know what I am in for. They are to be used as company vehicles and therefore MUST be reliable. Any help/suggestions would be nice.

Take a look at the MSN Carpoint website and Consumer Report Online - they really rip the older model Explorers apart. Everything from electrical to body. Something to go by, I guess, although my buddy has a '93 Explorer and has had very little trouble.

Guess all these problems are news to me. I have two explorers - a 98 5.0 with awd, and a 91 xlt 4X4 with 5 speed and 181K miles. The 91 purrs along just fine, all electrics work as new, and the 4X4 still works. It uses a quart of oil in 3000 miles, just enough to never add because I change at 3000. And I use 20W50 oil in all my (5) Fords.

i have a '91 explroer and have had literally no problem with it all year. the body does rust tho in spots, like tailgate, and rocker panels especially. easily fixable, did it myself. it has 174,000 miles on it. still going
Just to add to the responses.
I own a 91 XLT. 144K miles. It allways starts and runs. I've been using it as a commuter and boat towing vehicle on the weekends for 10 years now. Using it for towing will make it wear out sooner, very hard on the brakes, transmission, engine, and suspension. So I maintain it thoroughly. If you keep the brake calipers greased, the rotors should last. If you check the transmission fluid regularly and don't over heat it, it should last. The 4.0 liter pushrod engine started life as a 2.8 liter, and has grown into the 4.0liter. Problems I've heard of, but not encountered, are mainly due to the head gaskets and aluminum heads warping and cracking. You experience a loss in coolant when the heads go bad. This is well documented on the web. Go to any search engine (put in a -2002 and -2001 at the end of your query so you don't get all the new Explorer information).
My Son has a '92 Explorer with 220,000 + miles on it & has had no major problems with it. It uses some oil, but it's still running strong! Goes to show you that by doing regular maintence, they will run many miles!
My 1992 4.0 4x4 Auto has been the most reliable truck to this day that i have ever owned. Never has she given me the "Rock" treatment! Three major things that have happened though, but didn't leave me stranded are the torque converter let an impeller go loose on me, and that wasn't Ford's wrong doing. That was the tranny rebuilder. 2, the flywheel broke on me, but it broke around the boltholes behind the torque spreader plate, so i was able to drive it for a little while before i fixed the problem. It was just a little noisy to start, that was all. And one last big job, but this is due to how many kilometres are on it was the rear end's input pinion bearings started to gall on me so i had to replace all of the bearings in her, funny enough, i have a couple of buddies that had to do the same rebuild job on their differentials. The truck was at 330,000 Kilometres when the bearing went and that was last spring. Now the truck is at 360,000 Kilometres and going strong. I guess what they say it true. "The Best Never Rest"!!
