My dad and I were fixing up a 79 Bronco for him to mud race locally in the stock class, we thought we just about had it ready, but the 351m crapped out (it was a total pooch anyway, probably saved some embarassment!!) We wont try to replace engine for this year unless something falls into our laps. We were debating on the merits of a 400 vs a 351w, I am a big believer in the potential of the 400, but the class requirements are for a stock intake and exhaust manifolds as well as a factory carb. Will the factory 2v intake and carb choke off any gains made with additional compression and different cam??? or should I just go for a 351w for which I can get a factory 4v intake??? The transmission isnt an issue, I can change that out myself.
I thought about the spacer plate trick or even to take a 400 intake to a machine shop to have them mill off the carb mount area and then I would fabricate a 4v mount and weld it on. Strange twist of it is that I am largely responsible for the rules and class placement for this year (first year for our races) By the way the rules were written, it should be OK because either way, they are a factory intake. But if my dad went out and started whipping up on the class, you know someone would notice how it was done and bitch about it, claiming favoratism. So if you guys (or gals) were competing as an opponent,in a situation like that would you think it to be cheating???
In my area most events such as mud races or truck pulls, they will not allow the spacer plates on the 351/400 (in a late 70's ford) because it is an aftermarket component. But, they will allow a stock bb (in a late 70's ford) even though the rule book says stock means stock. They allow this because people bitch about the 351/400 not being competitive enough against the pre 1980 Chevy with a big block. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that Chevy 4x4 was not available with a BB until 1984. So why are they even allowed the run. Thats not stock. If they are allowing big blocks in trucks that never came with them, I should be able to use these spacer plates. But then again if I dont use them, and my truck is totally stock, and I do significantly well, I would be happy because I am not a CHEATER.
Our rules also allow for a swapped in engine as long as it is of the same brand, and the engine itself is visibly stock. Exception is for mini trucks with V8,s (ranger, S-10) I'd hate to put a lot of money and time into a 400 and in the end have to run an unmodified 2v intake- 400nut-Do you think that where you run that the stock intake with a 4v pad welded to it would pass????
