Question Transmission ...

Okay, having never experienced an automatic transmission that's gone bad, I have a question. I've been starting the Aerostar (89 3.0/auto) and driving it up and down the driveway this week (not plated, can't take it on the road) to see if it will hold a charge in the battery and such, since that was a problem for the guy I bought it from, and notice that once in a while it doesn't want to go into gear ... and sometimes will come out of gear while stopped and not go back in unless I give the engine a rev or two.

There IS fluid on the dipstick, but I haven't had the van up to operating temperature to properly check it idling in park. Could it just be low fluid, is the tranny gone with the wind, or could it just be sticky from sitting and not being used for months? Oh yeah, and where the heck does one add tranny fluid on these things? I can't imagine trying to convince fluid to go down the dipstick tube, even with one heck of a good funnel.

I think you may be low on fluid. If you can get the transmission good and warm then check it, you may get an indication of where the fluid level is. Also, the tranny fluid should be red/pink with a sweet smell. If it's brown and smells burnt, you may have a bum tranny.

For what it's worth, both of my C6's leak out the dipstick o-ring, and when they get low enough they won't go into gear right away.

The oil that IS on the dipstick doesn't appear to be burnt at all. It's still reddy-pinky. I'm hoping it's just low fluid.

oil should be between punched holes in dip stick when ice cold. this is what the manual says. so i always start mine in the morning and chech this before it is warmed up.
