Wrong ATF installed, any harm?
My truck is a '97 Explorer Sport. I just accidently replaced all (9.7 quarts) in it with Mercon 3 instead of the required Mercon 5. Am i going to do any damage to the tranny if I leave it in, or should I have it replaced right away?

It will likely cause some shift problems when the torque converter locks up , a shudder , that type of problem . Just to be on the safe side though , Id replace the fluid with the M5 , $20 worth of fluid sure beats the cost of having to have the trans repaired . Youll have to get rid of it all including what got into the torque converter .

I made an appointment to have it replaced with M5 on Monday. It seems to be shifting OK, but you're right... better to replace than have the tranny repaired.
