Just had to relay a story. My 01 stang had a chip the size of a egg on the hood. I took it to Bankston ford here in Frisco, TX. I was amazed when they actually repainted the whole hood! I cant imagine "The General" or anybody else doin that for a customer. Cudos to the Ford team! My truck sleeps better now...
There's real no other way to do it, you can't just paint that spot to match, you have to paint that whole section and sometimes paint the fenders on either side to match.
Paint is extremely difficult to match when painted differently. You can take the exact same paint, out of the same can, spray it on two different days and it'll come out just a touch different. humidity and temperature can change the final color of the paint, its a challenge.
Yeah, but what amazed me was a story that I remember from my chevy days. Chevrolet had a problem with the primer under the white paint that they put on the WT series trucks. You've seen them, big grey patches on the leading edge of the hoods and roofs. Well, they knew about the problem and diddnt fix it. It was the wrong primer. About 7+ years later, they finally "discovered" the problem and offered to give them a "voucher" for the problem.
I had three Rangers, bought each one new, each one had peeling paint. ('85, '90, '96). Now I have a 2003 F150, so far, so good. Don't pick on GM, Ford had exactly the same problem!
The Ford's silent paint recall on the late 80s early 90s full size pickups was only to the original owner - if you bought used you losed. I don't think they ever stood behind the Ranger paint jobs except on an individual basis.
They did do some work on my 1990. Painted the hood and roof. Then, the driver's door started peeling, so I had that fixed on my nickel. Then I sold the truck and bought the 1996. When I sold the '96, peeling had just started on the roof. I was not going to buy another Ford, but then I saw the King Ranch interior, and that was that.
Im not really picking on GM, Hell I have a 96 cheyenne thats beutiful. (runs like crap though) All I'm trying to say is this: ALL car manufaturers have problems of some sort. Ford just seemed to do a better job on rectifying their issues in my opinion.
