1996 Explorer OBDII Code P1400

My explorer is complaining with OBDII error code P1400. The hoses to the DPFE sensor look fine. Should I replace it, or could there be other causes as well?

What is the history of this sensor and the explorer?

Thanks in advance for the help,

Tim Trolinger

Ford has had lots of problems with DPFE Sensors over the yrs , More than likely yours has failed . Go thru the pinpoint tests for code 1400 just to rule it out .

Thanks for the response.

Before getting the new DPFE sensor I was to lazy to pull the hoses off and check for a restriction. That was a mistake!

When pulling to hoses off to install the new part, I found both of them clogged and replaced them. Although, since I already had the new part, I replaced it as well.

The code P1400 and the Check Engine Light is gone after clearing the codes with my OBD scanner.

BTW, those of you with high miles (mine has 140,000) on your later model Explorer might consider checking these two hoses for restrictions. At one end these rubber hoes connect directly to the secondary exhaust manifold so they get hot and are prone to breakdown. But are very easy to get to and replace.

I hope people will continue to post info here to help us driveway mechanics.

Thanks,

the hoses to the dpfe are a high temp.silicone ,and definately should be replaced with the same.the problem with the dpfe's are most likely related to condensation, water from exhaust entering the sensor and internally shorting it.FORD has revised this sensor with an a plastic sensor as opposed to the original aluminum which was prone to corrosion.
