I have a 97 explorer with 72,000 miles. my wife was driving on highway when she got off at exit ramp at stop sign she heard what she thought was an explosion. The car stalled and engine light came on.
It ended up being the crankshaft snaped in two. the local mechanic tells me i am better off to get new engine. and ford is claiming no responsability.
What should or can i do please give input. and what could of caused this to happen ive never heard of this happening before.
Rocky, do a search for "broken crankshaft" and you'll find numerous instances of this. This happens frequently enough that Ford has to know about it, but you're right, they ignore the problem and will not accept responsibility. The shafts snap directly behind the harmonic balancer, and in front of the front main bearing. The jury's still out as to what causes it. It may be from casting flaws in the crank, poor design, or bearing tolerance build-up during manufacture.
The engine has to be removed and completely disassembled to replace the crank. Considering labor costs, it might be best to just replace it with a new "crate" engine.

Currently own 93 ranger, and 97 explorer and haved previosly owned two other fords.Have been life long ford owner. but after this seriously considering never owning another ford again.
