Edmo hit it on the head. More ply's means a "tougher" tire to stand up to the weight capacities as well as the road. IMO you can also "feel" the difference when driving on load range "E" vs. "D" tires. They are harsher. Unless it's a serious work truck the "D" should be fine, however if it's worked each day then for the piece of mind and cost go with the "E".
