If you want to add even 50 Hp , you will shell out some major $$$$$ even if you do the work yourself . Those kind of Hp increases , in my opinion , are unrealistic for an Explorer . Adding Hp like that is going to stress things like the suspension , tires , brakes etc . Adding things like a K&N air filter , maybe an aftermarket exahust system will yield some gains in performance , in the range of maybe 5 to 10 hp , & thats being generous . Unless youre ready to do a major engine overhaul & add a supercharger , something like that , you wont find a quick & easy hp or performance increase .
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Nov-01 AT 10:51 PM (EST)]For under $3500, you can bolt on a 100,000 mile warrantied belt driven super charger. This ups the ponies almost 100+!
I cannot remember the brand name, but I saw it in Explorer Express, a 4x4 explorer magazine. If I were rich, I'd DO IT myself!
The Explorer Express superchargers are for the OHV 4.0L and the 5.0L V8, not the SOHC 4.0L. A couple of years ago, they did show the BBK for the SOHC, but for availability it said "coming this summer". Three summers have passed now since the add first came out and I can't even find a reference to it anymore on their site. I have read of one person modifying a supercharger for the SOHC in his '01 Ranger. He has about $2000 in it. Until someone releases a supercharger for the SOHC 4.0L, about the only way you will get 50-100 HP is with NOX. Too many reports of bad things happening to your motor if everything isn't done exactly correct to make me want to go that route though. There is a guy on another board that claims to have added NOX to his '98 SOHC Explorer using a generic kit.
