I have a 97 model 150 4x4 ,today with no warning at all I lost the ability to steer , my first thoughts is the pump .Has anyone experienced this before and is this pump very hard to change ?
Hi and welcome to the forum
That's not a problem that I've seen on these trucks but it does sound like the pump has died.
What size engine do you have in your truck? They can be a bit of a pain to replace.
I pulled the pump off today and the shaft with the pulley fell out , so it was pretty much a no brainer , called the dealer ,it was 180.00 and the auto parts store was 40.00 with trade in ,another no brainer. The thing that worries me is how hard it was to steer when it broke, almost none at all.
The only time I have seen the shaft break is too much tension on the belt. Over tightened and it can force the pulley to work a little off center actually bending the shaft jsut a touch....not enough to notice...but enough to break the shaft after it is used awhile and heating up and cooling down, over and over.
Above it is suggested that you flush your PS fluid. Question, what is the best way to do that ? Is there a drain plug ? How do you get the old out ? Siphon ?
