I joined this forum tonight because of a problem I encountered trying to remove the windshield wiper motor from my 1993 Explorer today. I have removed the three bolts which hold the motor and bracket to the firewall, but I can't remove the motor and transmission from the firewall. There obviously is something that has to be done to "unhook" a transmission gear shaft from the wiper mechanism inside the cowl. What's not obvious to me is what I have to do to accomplish the "unhooking". Can someone tell me how -- and what -- I have to do to get the motor out of the engine compartment??? Thanks!!
Neal
First remove the wiper arm on the drivers side. There is a slide clip at the base of the wiper arm just slide it forward. Check for a screw (phillips) at the top left side of the cowl (drivers side) its kind of hiding there and if there is one there remove it. Then Pry up the cowl gently using your fingers on the drivers side. There are clips that will release all along the top and bottom, it. Finish prying up the cowl and look inside you will see the wiper arms and a 5/16" bolt that attaches to the wiper tranny/motor. Simply remove the 5/16" bolt and pull the bracket arm off the shaft and there you have it. If you have questions just ask.
Per instructions, I removed the wiper arm and looked carefully for the phillips screw. I found none and so far have found no way to loosen the cowl. I totally understand the wiper arms bolt, but still haven't been able to get at it. Is it possible that I have to remove the nuts which hold the wiper arm mechanism (the one on which the wiper arm and blade attach) to remove the cowl? I realize I'm slow and hesitant, but I want to make sure I do it right and don't lose the whole wiper arm assembly under the cowl. Thanks again for any help. Neal
