Last month I was on here about the sliding door on my '91 stuck shut, and as I went through past posts it turned out eehoepp appeared to come the closest in knowing what the problem was; he felt the rod bending outward was the problem. However I didn't want to take on the job of cutting a hole in the sheet metal big enough to put my hand into, so I cut a "door" about 2"X3" at the rear of the sliding door about where I thought the rod would be. Through it I pulled the rod toward me with a pair of pliers and pushed the rod from the front of the door at the same time (no helper needed) and the door opened easily.
Looking in through the hole I had cut, I could see that the lever the rod goes into was bent outward. I was able to get a small pry bar on it and bent it in a bit. The door works fine now but I'm being extra careful to open & close the door as gently as possible. It looks like the rod should have a locating support at the rear of the door as well as the middle.
Thanks for all of your input
