While doing a regular PM this weekend on my '94 ext 4 liter, I noticed just how VERY close the primary cat convertor is factory mounted near the trans body!! Also, the trans cooler lines (external cooler in use) are BETWEEN the trans body and the red hot cat........what the heck?! Please tell me I'm missing some important reason for this! None of these have been changed from OEM.
Just who's responsible for all this A1 engineering ?
(OK, calming down a notch here, sorry)
I'm thinking of eliminating the primary cat and just running the secondary. OR replace both cats with a (single) new high flow 2 1/2in cat from Carsound. I REALLY like this van and has made a great impact on our family since it came to us last Nov. and I am dedicated to doing whatever it takes to keep it reliable.
Thanks for the Oregon heads-up, K, no cats eh? That would solve my heat issue fo sho!
The stock cats do have a heat sheild on them (both), but even so, the trans case is subject to very near the same temp radiating off of those sheilds. Being aluminum doesn't help the trans case as it will soak up that heat. Those sheilds are hot enough to make the air shimmer around them, not to mention those cooler tubes snuggled close there too.
Anyone running a single cat placed near where the second stock cat normally is? Passing my emissions test is of concern too.
what I was actually thinking of is this stuff my grandpa wrapped around the exhaust headers of his Banshee 4-wheeler to keep from burning his leg on the red hot manifold.
it looked sorta like chrome dryer ducting. works really really good
That's what I was hoping, Marc M, thanks for replying!
The heat wrap was a definite thought in the begining, but eliminating the actual heat source would be even better, thanks for your thoughts Koalamazed
Gonna' call Carsound and order a new high flow cat! Rah!
