I recently bought a 74 F-250 from a dealership. They claim the engine is a 428 with less than 20,000 miles on it. I took it with a grain of salt considering the source. How do I determine for sure that it is a 428 and are there tests out there that can estimate engine wear or damage to get an idea aboout the current wear?
Also would love some input on some performance upgrades for less than $500.
I plan on installing a Magnaflow dual exhaust system soon. The truck currently has a Mallory ignition system, I believe Cobra heads and I just had an Edelbrock carb installed. It also has 4:10 gears. Looking into amsoil air filter or possibly k&n.
I'm also considering on running synthetic fluids throughout the rig.
Any and all input is greatly appreciated as I am somewhat mechanically challenged!
stick with the current oil. you can use a compression tester to see how the cylinders are holding up. that truck would have started out with a 390 so a 428 is punched and bored version of that original motor. i think all thats left would be a cam upgrade but that motor might already have that done being it might have cobra heads. what size carb you running?
Thanks for the input! Why do you say stick with the current oil? The carb is a Edelbrock series #1406. I'm not sure what the cfm is though. What type of cam would you say is a good performance cam for this motor?
you have a 600cfm carb, i have one and it is very good. how exactly do you know if it has cobra heads. do they make cobrajet heads for a 390 based engine. do you have long tube headers now, get some
