Even though the power gains have got to be lower than those figures, it's still gotta be a big gain. Just think about it. The 5.4 is rated at 300 HP while breathing through a 2" bottleneck, not to mention the small filter assembly...open this up to what it should be, it's gotta see a decent gain. The mustang's factory intake system is a MUCH better design, yet they still see a 5-10 HP gain on the 4.6 SOHC with only 260 HP. I've got one on order already, even though my truck only has 140 miles on it. My first thoughts when I saw the airaid was how great it looked compared to the UGLY factory system. I love the 5.4 3-valve, so why cover it up with ugly plastic junk intake parts.
...which brand of Cold Air intake do you guyz think provides the best all around results? AEM, K&N, AIRFORCE ONE, AIRRAID or VOLANT??? All those decisions. I guess it basically would come down to which do you prefer to see under the hood huh?
Based on a visual inspection, without any measuring, so far, it's gotta be a complete replacement of the factory system. Sometimes you can get lucky and use just a K&N and modify the factory intake. I don't believe that will do any good with this system. There are unacceptable restrictions both before and after the stock filter box.
Personally, I don't care what it looks like. I'll go for maximum airflow with the least increase in airflow possible. Also, if it doesn't appear to be a real cold ari intake, it's out. I personally think you'd loose any advantage of a larger tube if you pull in hot air from under the hood. When you've towed quite a bit, you realize just how much more power youre vehicle has breathing cold night air vs warm day air. So be sure to pick something that draws from outside the engine compartment.
So far, I like AirAid, but I haven't looked at all the options yet and K&N doesn't have a FIPK for the 2004 5.4L yet.
Decision made. I'm going with Volant. The sealed box will keep warm air from leaking in and minimize air noise. Volant got around the 2 in diameter cold are tube issue by taping both the 2 in hole as well as another retangular hole facing the front of the truck. It's a tad more expensive, but I think it will provide the extra power without the noise some cold air intakes suffer from.
Now I gotta find dual exhausts. All the cat-back's seem to connect to the factory exhaust after the y pipe has joined the exhaust from the two cats.
